High exploration activity on the Norwegian shelf

At the end of the first half of 2010 (as of 24 June) 25 exploration wells on the Norwegian shelf had been completed. During the same period last year, 33 exploration wells were drilled.

Emissions to air from the petroleum industry declined in 2009. This applies to carbon dioxide (CO₂), nitrogen oxide (NOx) and volatile hydrocarbons, according to the operating companies’ annual emissions reporting. These reports are made in parallel to the Norwegian Climate and Pollution Agency (Klif), the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) and the Norwegian Oil Industry Association (OLF) in EnvironmentWeb – a joint database for the authorities and the oil and gas industry.

First exploration licence for CO 2 on the Norwegian shelf

The Ministry of Petroleum and Energy (MPE) has issued Gassnova SF a licence to acquire seismic data with the aim of identifying suitable storage locations for permanent storage of CO₂. This is the first time an exploration licence for CO2 has been granted on the Norwegian shelf.

Sound waves from seismic data acquisition resulted in increased catches for some species and smaller catches for others. It appears that pollack may, to some extent, have withdrawn from the area, while other species seem to remain. These are the main results from the research commissioned by the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) and carried out by the Institute of Marine Research during the summer of 2009 on the effects of seismic surveys off Vesterålen.
