Considerable interest in mature areas in APA 2013

13.09.2013
As of the application deadline for awards in predefined areas (APA) 2013 on the Norwegian continental shelf, the authorities have received applications from 50 companies.

There has been considerable interest in the APA scheme in recent years, which has resulted in many new production licences. Large parts of the APA area have already been awarded. Despite this, the companies on the Norwegian shelf also showed great interest in APA 2013.

This shows that mature areas on the Norwegian shelf are still interesting. Through the APA scheme, many new companies have had the chance to look at areas that have been available for exploration for several years.

The objective of the APA scheme is to stimulate exploration activity in mature areas, where generally only minor discoveries that could not justify an independent development are expected:

“It is therefore good resource management to prove and exploit these resources before existing infrastructure in connection with other fields is shut down,” says Sissel Eriksen, Director of Exploration in the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate. "This year there is especially great interest in available acreage in the northern part of the North Sea and the central part of the Norwegian Sea. We also notice an increased interest in the Barents Sea in relation to previous years. "

“We see substantial competition for acreage that has been awarded several times before.”

By the deadline of 11 September, companies could apply for a total of 103 029 km2, distributed into 377 blocks or parts of blocks. The APA area in the Norwegian Sea was expanded by six blocks in the area around Aasta Hansteen compared with APA 2012. In addition, acreage that has been relinquished within the APA area in the past year is included in the area the companies could apply for this year.

In APA 2012, the authorities received applications from 47 companies for an area of 107 865 km2. Of this, 19 089 km2 were awarded early in 2013.

APA 2013 was announced on 15 February 2013:

The awards will most likely be announced at the beginning of 2014.
