NPD’s core store

Oljeprove
The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) stores core samples and drill cuttings from exploration and production wells on the Norwegian shelf. In addition, the NPD has oil and reference samples for geochemical standards.

An overview of wells with various types of available data can be found on the NPD’s fact pages

The NPD’s core store is available for viewing core samples and extracting samples for studies.

Core viewing

Core viewing must be booked well in advance. Bookings must be sent by email to Bestilling.Kjernevisning@npd.no

From 1 March 2014 is the price for access to the NPD's core viewing room within normal working hours (08:00-16:00) NOK 3200 per day per room.

Core viewings can also be arranged outside normal working hours (subject to reasonable advance agreement and assuming that NPD personnel are available).

The hourly rate for viewings on weekdays after working hours (16:00 – 22:00) is NOK 600.

The hourly rate for viewings on the weekends is NOK 800.

When checking out new cores outside working hours, two people from the NPD must be present, and the hourly rate will therefore be doubled.

All users of viewing rooms and the core store outside normal working hours must be registered in the NPD’s visitor system, and they must all report to the responsible NPD employee upon arrival and when leaving.

Electronic application form for sampling geological material from exploration and development wells

Geological samples consist of the following types:

  • Cuttings
  • Conventional cores (no sidewall cores)
  • Oil from discoveries and fields

Please fill out this form to apply for sample release from the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate.

Final reports for studies, results from analyses, thin sections, micropaleontological and palynological slides based on studies on the NPD’s geological samples must be submitted to the NPD within 6 months after sampling. This also applies to studies partially based on NPD samples.

If you need any assistance using the electronic application form, please contact Ida Margrete Meling.

E-mail requests for Norwegian geochemical standards (NGS)

Applications for samples from Norwegian geochemical standards (NGS) must contain:

  • the applicant’s name, postal address, telephone and fax number, email address and a contact person
  • description of normal analytical activity in the laboratory
