In connection with NPD's supervision of the petroleum activities on the Norwegian continental shelf, the NPD receives from the operators, according to regulations, material such as wireline logs, drill bit cuttings, wet samples, conventional cores, and dead oil samples. Drill bit cuttings are collected at intervals not exceeding ten m throughout the borehole, and intervals not exceeding three metres in geological formations which may contain hydrocarbons. For wet samples (minimum 0.5 kg) the same intervals apply. Complete longitudinal sections of cores, containing not less than one fourth of the core, are also supplied.
The NPD publishes data and releases material for research and teaching purposes. The Directorate release data according to the provisions in the public administrative Act, and the petroleum regulations. Currently these regulations enforce 2 years confidentiality after well completion, before release of samples and raw data.
Well data summary sheets (WDSS) contain a summary of data from released wellbores. The purpose of the publication is to show which wellbores are released, and to summarize available technical data and geological information for each well.
Currently (March 2009) data for around 900 released wellbores have been published, among them all the released wells in the Norwegian Sea and the Barents Sea.
Wellbores can be sorted by the publication date of extended well fact pages. Please note that updates of the extended fact pages for individual wells occur on a continuous basis. Typically, such updates will be refinement of lithostratigraphic tops resulting from the latest interpretations of an area, or correction of data due to feedback from users of the fact pages.
Please note that data for a well may be split in several well-entries. If you do not find the data you are after you may be looking in the wrong entry. For technical reasons, all available cores and core photos from a wellbore, including re-entries, are usually found under the primary entry.
Geochemistry raw data are available as pdf files and as character separated value (csv) text files. The pdf files contain data tables scanned from geochemical reports. Where available, sample-overviews and information about analytical procedures are included. Furthermore, the files contain information and data related to fluid sampling and drilling mud, taken from various technical reports. The csv files can be imported directly into common spread sheet programs.
