16/03/2003 Press release no. 10/2003: Esso Exploration and Production Norway AS, a subsidiary of ExxonMobil Corporation, is the operator of production license 264. The company has now completed drilling on wildcat well 6706/6-1, the so-called Hvitveis prospect on the Naglfardomen in the Vøring basin.
The well was drilled to a total depth of 3414 meter below sea level. Sea depth at the location is approximately 1300 meters.
This is the first wildcat well in production license 264, which covers blocks 6706/5, 6706/6 and 6707/4. The production license was awarded in the 16th licensing round and is located in the Norwegian Sea, about 320 km west of Bodø and 265 km north of the Åsgard field.
Minor amounts of gas were encountered, but the discovery is not commercial at this time. The well has provided valuable geological information, including on the reservoir development in the area. This will have significance for future evaluation of the exploration potential in this production license and the surrounding areas. The well will now be permanently plugged and abandoned.
The drilling activities were carried out by the West Navigator drilling rig. When work on this well is completed, Statoil will be taking over the West Navigator to drill a wildcat well on Griphøgda, production license 281, north of the Ormen Lange discovery in the Norwegian Sea.
