17/07/2009 Press release 46/2009: StatoilHydro Petroleum AS, operator of production licence 159 D, has concluded the drilling of wildcat well 6507/3-7. The well proved gas. The discovery is located two km northwest of the 6507/3-3 gas discovery (Idun) and about 10 km north of the 6507/5-1 oil/gas discovery (Skarv).
The objective of the well was to prove petroleum in the Fangst and Båt group in Middle and Lower Jurassic reservoir rocks. The well proved gas in the Fangst group. The underlying Båt group was water-filled.
The size of the discovery is estimated at between 0.6 and 3 billion standard cubic metres (Sm3) of recoverable gas. There is a potential for additional volumes beyond the proven gas volumes and further delineation of the discovery will be considered. The well was not formation-tested, but extensive data acquisition and sampling were conducted.
The licensees in the production licence will consider producing the discovery via Skarv.
6507/3-7 is the first exploration well in production licence 159 D. In 2008 production licence 159 D was carved out of production licence 159, which was awarded in licensing round 12 B in 1989.
The well was drilled to a vertical depth of 3833 metres below sea level and was concluded in the Åre formation in the Lower Jurassic.
The water depth is 377 metres. The well will now be permanently plugged and abandoned.
Well 6507/3-7 was drilled by the Ocean Vanguard drilling facility, which will now proceed to production licence 074 in the Norwegian Sea to drill wildcat well 6407/2-5 S where StatoilHydro Petroleum AS is the operator.
