16/03/2009 Press Release 16/2009:StatoilHydro Petroleum AS is concluding the drilling of wildcat well 6705/10-1 in the Norwegian Sea. The well, which proved gas, is located 345 km north-west of Sandnessjøen.

The purpose of the well was to prove petroleum in Upper Cretaceous reservoir rocks in a prospect called Asterix. The well proved gas in the Upper Cretaceous. A preliminary estimate of the size of the discovery is 16 billion cubic metres of recoverable gas.

The well was not formation-tested, but extensive data collection and sampling were carried out. The licensees will evaluate the result to clarify the resource potential and to consider potential development of the gas discovery.

The well was the first exploration well in production licence 327 B. Production licence 327 B was awarded in 2007 as a supplemental award to production licence 327 from the 18th licensing round (2004).

The well was drilled to a vertical depth of 3775 metres below the sea surface, and was concluded in the Upper Cretaceous.
The well will be permanently plugged and abandoned.

Well 6507/10-1 was drilled in 1360 metres of water by the Transocean Leader drilling facility. The facility will now move to the North Sea to drill appraisal well 30/11-7 A in production licence 035 B, where StatoilHydro Petroleum AS is the operator.
