03/05/2012 Lundin Norway AS, operator of production licence 501, is about to complete the drilling of appraisal wells 16/2-11 and 16/2-11 A.
The 16/2-6 oil discovery Johan Sverdrup was proven during autumn 2010 in Upper Jurassic reservoir rocks. Wells 16/2-11 and 16/2-11 A were drilled about 3.3 kilometres southwest of the 16/2-6 discovery well.
The objective of appraisal well 16/2-11 was to gain information about the reservoir in key parts of the discovery. The well encountered a gross oil column of 54 metres in Upper to Middle Jurassic rocks of good to very good reservoir quality. The oil/water contact was not encountered. A successful formation test was carried out. The maximum production rate from a seven-metre interval in Middle Jurassic sandstone was 430 standard cubic metres (Sm3) of oil per flow day through a 60/64-inch nozzle. The test showed good flow properties in a reservoir unit that had not previously been formation-tested.
The objective of appraisal well 16/2-11 A was primarily to encounter the oil/water contact, as well as examine variations in reservoir quality and thickness. The well encountered the reservoir 760 metres northeast of well 16/2-11, with a gross oil column of 35 metres. The oil/water contact was similar to nearby wells and the well confirmed the good reservoir properties in well 16/2-11.
Extensive data acquisition and sampling were carried out in both wells. These are the seventh and eighth exploration wells in production licence 501. The licence was awarded in APA 2008.
Appraisal wells 16/2-11 and 16/2-11 A were drilled to vertical depths of 2125 and 2072 metres respectively, and total measured depths of 2126 metres and 2365 metres below the sea surface, respectively. Both wells were terminated in Triassic rocks. The wells will be permanently plugged and abandoned. Water depth at the site is 113 metres.
The wells were drilled with the Bredford Dolphin drilling facility, which will now proceed to production licence 519 to drill wildcat well 6201/11-3, where Lundin Norway AS is the operator.
