The Shelf in 2006 - New boundaries for the Norwegian shelf
05/01/2007
The UN to establish new outer boundaries for the Norwegian continental shelf in 2007.
In 1996, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs asked the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate to collect data and map areas in the Norwegian Sea and the Barents Sea to find out how far the Norwegian shelf extends beyond the 200-nautical mile boundary. If Norway's viewpoint prevails, the Norwegian shelf will become approx. 250,000 square kilometers larger than its current size. Collection of data on the Norwegian shelf has been completed, and the NPD's documentation was submitted to the UN at the end of December 2006. A summary of the documentation and maps showing the Norwegian viewpoint of the shelf boundaries may be found on the NPD's or the UN's web sites.
