Historic course starts

23/02/2009 23 february marks the beginning of the first course for fishery experts used in connection with acquisition of seismic data on the Norwegian shelf. This makes the 26 participants at the first course being held in Bergen a little part of history themselves.

The atmosphere of conflict between seismic data acquisition and the fisheries has grown in recent years. The fishery experts thus play a very important role in improving this relationship. The role of fishery expert has advisory status in relation to the survey's management as well as navigators on board.

The purpose of the courses is to enhance the competence of the experts in various areas including regulations, conflict management, reporting, notification, organisation and factors such as the startle effect and the survey activity. Language tests (English) will also be administered, as well as a final test of the participants' knowledge. Individuals who want to take the course must have thorough knowledge about fishery activities.

Additional courses will be held during March in Troms, Ålesund, and then again in Bergen. The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate and the Directorate of Fisheries are responsible for the courses and their implementation.
