01/12/2015 The special report in this issue, as in the previous one, focus on the 50th anniversary of the first licensing round on the Norwegian continental shelf (NCS).
We look this time at the development of offshore safety over this period. In addition, we carry an interview with Eldar Myhre – a prominent union leader when the big NCS developments were under way – and his son Aslak. A former political activist, the latter is now head of Norway’s National Library. The pair have many reflections on the growth generated by oil – and on the next chapter.
Substantial fields are still being developed off Norway, but the road to these is no longer as straight and smooth as before. Thinking outside the box was needed to get Maria on track.
The level of activity in Norway’s oil industry is declining. In a major interview, petroleum and energy minister Tord Lien reminds the companies that they are still obliged to make the investment needed to recover profitable resources.
