Webinar: Recent Development of Near Miscible WAG
Welcome to the third presentation from Arne Skauge, Energy Research Norway. This lecture will give a practical introduction to modelling of immiscible WAG processes. The key parameters will be defined, and their impact will be discussed in case study simulations.

The lecture will discuss effects of fine scale simulations on near miscible gas and WAG. In particular, we describe the recovery as a result of two different but related mechanism due to compositional effects and IFT (interfacial tensions) effect on relperms and (ROS) residual oil saturation. We denote these mechanisms as MCE and MIFT for the compositional and IFT effects, respectively, and these are shown on a “phase diagram”. This mechanistic approach allows us to quantify impact of, compositional exchanges, film flow, capillary forces, phase trapping, etc. on oil mobilization. Fine scale simulations in heterogeneous systems allow us to examine the details of multi-scale physics and analyze how various mechanism interact.
We will show examples and explain the benefit of WAG compared to near miscible continuous gas injection in fine scale simulations in heterogeneous models. These models are at a sufficiently fine scale to show that capillary pressure effects lead to quite different distributions of remaining oil in the system for WW and OW cases after near miscible CO2-WAG. These simulations have also proved that the mechanism of viscous crossflow is a key factor in sweep by near miscible WAG in such systems.
The effects studied in this work cannot be seen in very coarse scale full field models, if these are taken as a starting point. Thus, some of the effects we observe will not appear to contribute in a full-field simulation. We show that it is necessary to upscale the fine scale effects to order to better quantify the oil recovery potential. This has been demonstrated in some previous work presented in this seminar series, but further examples will be presented here using this upscaling methodology.
