Drilling permit for well 34/6-5 S in production licence 554
The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate has granted Equinor Energy AS a drilling permit for well 34/6-5 S, cf. Section 13 of the Resource Management Regulations.
Well 34/6-5 S will be drilled from the West Hercules drilling facility in position 61°36'4.81"N and 2°44'27.87"E after concluding the drilling of wildcat well 31/2-22 S with optional sidetrack-appraisal in production licence 090.
The drilling programme for well 34/6-5 S relates to the drilling of a wildcat well in production licence 554. Equinor Energy AS is the operator with an ownership interest of 40 per cent. The other licensees are AKER BP ASA (30 per cent) and Vår Energi AS (30 per cent).
The area in this licence consists of part of block 34/6. The well will be drilled about 25 kilometres east of the Snorre field and 1.5 kilometres northwest of the 34/6-2 S “Garantiana” discovery well.
Production licence 554 was awarded on 19 February 2010 (APA 2009). This is the sixth exploration well to be drilled in the licence.
The permit is contingent on the operator securing all other permits and consents required by other authorities prior to commencing the drilling activity.
There are vast proven gas resources on the Norwegian shelf which are currently without development plans. Much of this gas is located in tight reservoirs – which makes it difficult to produce.
The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) has conducted a mapping of gas resources that, for various reasons, have yet to be developed. Several of these discoveries could be produced in a manner that is profitable from a socio-economic perspective.
