Bulletinene oppsummerer den gjeldende stratigrafiske nomenklaturen (navnefortegnelsen) på norsk sokkel.
Stratigrafien er den grenen av geologien som blant annet forsker på lagdeling, alder, sammensetning, fordeling av lagdelte geologiske avleiringer.
